Deep Dive
The Core Crawling Tool for Technical SEO
Screaming Frog SEO Spider is a desktop application that crawls all internal URLs of a website, mimicking Google's crawler, to analyse technical SEO issues in bulk. Capable of processing thousands of URLs simultaneously, this tool is indispensable for technical audits on large e-commerce sites and enterprise web projects.
Key issues Screaming Frog detects: 4xx/5xx error codes (broken pages and server errors), redirect chains (301/302 redirects with multiple hops), duplicate content (identical or very similar title/meta descriptions), missing or excessively long metadata, and canonical tag inconsistencies.
Our Usage Processes at Detartech
During the project intake phase, we perform a full crawl of the existing site, prioritise all issues, and produce an action plan. In post-development checks, we re-crawl to confirm the new structure is technically clean.
We use Screaming Frog together with Google Analytics and Search Console integration: by matching crawl data with real traffic data, we prioritise problematic pages and determine intervention order by business impact. Using the Custom Extraction feature, we bulk-verify per-page Schema.org presence, hreflang consistency, and robots meta tag status.
